Romani Design is the world’s first Romani design studio, established by the Hungarian Vlach Gypsy sisters Erika and Helena Varga in 2010. The ultimate goal of their brand is to provide a glimpse into the colourful world of Gypsy culture through their own contemporary handcrafted designer products applying motifs and design elements of their traditional art, enhancing by it the social and cultural prestige of Romani communities. Romani Design is an authentic, conscious and proud representative of Romani minority culture, while it also willingly becomes integrated into the universe of Hungarian folk heritage, contemporary fashion and design trends, where they play a pivotal and acclaimed role.
“Fashion means to me what words mean for writers, colours for painters. Through my clothes, I can express my identity and create a world in which I enjoy living." – professes the founder, artistic director and designer of Romani Design, Erika Varga.
Romani Design is committed to the preservation of the Romani cultural heritage and its conveyance to younger generations. Its founders work untiringly and persistently for their purpose and believe in the constructive power of the dialogue between majority and minority cultures, building a solid bridge for it from the splendidly colourful fabrics of personally tailored fashion. In their designer collections, fashion becomes a contemporary toolset of social dialogue. The Romani and Hungarian traditions and folk clothing cultures complement each other marvellously in the forms and motifs of their designer clothes.
