Verbunk

Recruitment Songs, or verbunks, conjure up the Romantic age and national revival in Hungary.

DANCING HUNGARIANS

This performance presents the historical process of the birth and survival of our Hungarian dance heritage, from our most ancient folk customs up to the period of the dance-house movement of the 1970's. Ancient Hungarian life and colorful history come to life, but instead of wars that can be learnt from history books, social gatherings and ancient celebrations are presented.

Song of the Stag

The stag is a universally recognised, archaic cultural-historical symbol, whose annually renewed antlers represent eternal return. The stag, standing by the gate to a golden path, beckons us to follow him into our own spirit world. He is the demon, the shaman, the wizard, the fairy, the King of the Dead, able to call any hunter into another world, a new world.

PANNONIAN FRESCO

Several centuries of European culture and history have disappeared in the mists of time and myth...

After Antiquity, waves of great migrations came, followed by centuries of Christianity creating a unified, but still diverse culture in this part of the world.

In a dance-language inherited from our ancestors, this performance tells stories of human emotion, chronicles of magnificent battles between love and death, all through the characteristic colors of Spring (birth), Summer (consummation), Autumn (loss) and Winter (dance macabre).

Wedding dance

based on László Nagy’s poem “Wedding”

”Two human stars, married for eternity, for good and truthfulness.”

It is a piece against decay and destruction, against all retracting forces, a piece for the youth.

Sunlegend

Sunlegend spectacularly features the perfect harmony of Nikola Parov's music and Gábor Mihályi's choreography. The show meets the requirements of the 21st century audience, being a unique and powerful combination of the ancient motives, the dynamic quality of traditional movements, mysticism and music in a fresh, modern tone.

MEZŐSÉG – MICROCOSMOS

The Hungarian State Folk Ensemble’s Mezőség – Microcosm draws on the music and dance traditions of the region of central Transylvania known as the Mezőség.  Located north of the city of Kolozsvár, this rolling landscape of hills and shallow valleys has oft been likened to a “dead sea” –an apt simile, given that millions of years ago, the landscape lay beneath a billowing Pannonian Sea, known today from the sediments it left behind.

Transcarpathia Invoked

The performance shows for the first time in the history of Hungarian folk dance the colourful and rich traditional culture of the nations living in Eastern Carpathia as well as in its beyond, Transcarpathia: Hungarians, Ukrainians, Ruthenes, Romanians, Gipsies, and Jews.

HUNGARIAN CONCERTO

Hommage à Bartók Béla

The political cataclysm of the nineties had resulted in the emergence of new democracies in Central and East Europe. The living memory of the revolution of 1956 had made Hungary a protagonist of such changes. A new Hungarian Republic was born. This signi-ficant historic event fundamentally and quickly reshaped our economic, social and cultural environment. However, the whole world is continuously changing and we are influenced by these changes.
